Tuareg Jewellery

In the tradition of the nomadic Tuareg people of the Sahara desert, Ahmed travels through north and west Africa selling this silver and ebony jewellery produced in his village of Bouloumbouk in central Niger.

The jewellery was originally made from silver coins and was worn as a powerful talisman, with the crosses depicting the 4 corners of the world. Jewellery has also been used extensively in trade, particularly in times of drought to purchase livestock.

Today the proceeds of his sales all go back to the village co-operative to fund communal projects such as water well maintenance, housing, health and education.
