Senegal Wolof Baskets

We work with women from the Wolof ethnic background in several small villages in the Thies district of Senegal where this type of basket making has been practiced for many generations. The baskets have always been made by binding Njodax, a thick grass that grows on the edges of wetlands, with strips of palm fronds. Today the women have substituted the palm for thin strips of coloured plastic from recycled prayer mats.
For a more refined appearance we use artisans in Dakar to finish some of our baskets with soft leather trimming.
A very large basket will take the weavers several days to complete
